Today, while Goodwill shopping, I came across a book from 1974 titled The Everything Book: A Treasury of Things to Make and Do. The book had a magical sense to me as I flipped through it. It is 135 pages of craft ideas to enjoy with your children. The last chapter of the book is dedicated to grandma’s and includes a “Grandmother’s

Treasure Chest” idea.
The author lists all the household things worth saving and worth buying. You keep these things in a special closet or box. Pull out the Treasure Chest when ready to get the imaginations of the children in full speed.
What I loved the most about this book however, wasn’t all the fun ideas inside but the writer’s intentions. She wrote this not as a way to occupy your children or enforce some new skill or education lesson. Instead, it is written for families to ENJOY their children. A way to engage with and get swept up into another world with them.
Anyway, here is the author’s suggested save and buy list for your Treasure Box:
Some things worth saving:
cardboard tubes from toilet tissue and paper towels
of cloth, lace, braid etc
old nylon stockings
scraps of wood, linoleum, tile, carpet etc
pieces of candles
boxes of all kinds
tissue paper and cleansing tissues
newspaper and magazines
old toothbrushes (for spatter painting and for scrubbing)
Some things worth buying:
plaster of Paris
What I would add to the craft supply list:
I have a craft closet where I try to keep a hold of crafty items. It has definitely become a required part of our home. If I were to add to this list I would also include:
pipe cleaners (or fuzzy sticks)
yarns and strings
What would you add to the list of crafty things worth saving and buying?
Get Your Copy of The Everything Book: A Treasury of Things to Make and Do
I really got this book for a steal at Goodwill for $2! The same hard back edition is $24.99 and there are currently only 5 copies left. There is 1 paperback edition however, for only 39 cents!
