How to Clean Your Microwave Without Chemicals

by Miranda on March 19, 2013

Clean Your Microwave Without Chemicals

I don’t use my microwave oven often.  But when I do I am sure to make a mess. Food pops and spatters all over the inside of the microwave. If I don’t wipe it out immediately, then it hardens and crusts onto the surface. In the past I would pull out a heavy duty chemical spray and let is break down the grime before wiping it out.  As I test out all of these amazing Pinterest Pins I have learned to put more trust into God made solutions. Water is actually really amazing at cleaning believe it or not! I feel ridiculous to say that, but I cannot believe how heavily I relied on chemicals that were not only bad for me but also expensive.

If you are like me and want to keep life simple, this is a great place to start!  Water is a great way to Clean Your Microwave Without Chemicals.

How to Clean Your Microwave Without Chemicals

Place a cup of water into your microwave for about 5 minutes. The water will heat up and steam the inside. Then you can just wipe it all right out!

An additional tip by Unsophisticook is to add some vanilla extract into the water to spread a yummy aroma through your home.

Does this Pinterest Pin Work?

before and after cleaning microwave without chemicals

Yes it definitely works. My microwave wasn’t really to terribly dirty before. However, to play it fair I decided to FIRST wipe the microwave down with a dry paper towel. Leaving only the hard grime. I then placed the cup of water inside with the vanilla and turned it on for five minutes. I made myself a glass of tea, checked my email and was alerted to return by the sound of the microwave dinging.

Returning to the kitchen, I inhaled deeply, hoping to catch a pleasing vanilla aroma. But instead smelled nasty chemical-like stink. I am guessing it is my fault for being cheap. I didn’t have real vanilla extract but instead used cheap-o baker’s imitation vanilla.

I then opened the microwave, removed the glass cup filled with water and burned my hand. Remember, five minutes in the microwave means the water is boiling and if it is in a glass cup- the glass conducts heat very well. I probably need more sleep.

Regardless, my burnt hand grabbed a paper towel and easily wiped away all of the remaining crusted food splatters! It really worked!

So as it turns out, Water is a great way to Clean Your Microwave Without Chemicals.  Just don’t use the cheap imitation vanilla and think your house will smell amazing.

Easy Shower and Tub Cleaner

by Cassie on March 14, 2013

I HATE cleaning the bathtub!!! Hate cleaning it with a passion! It is always one of last things on my “to do” Household cleaning list. So when I saw the idea for an Easy Shower and Tub Cleaner on Pinterest, I knew I had to test it. If not for me, then at least for the sake of my children!

Easy shower and Tub cleaner by Pintriedit.com

What you need for your Shower and Tub Cleaner:

  1. Dawn dish washing liquid
  2. Vinegar
  3. Scrubby dish wand

How to use it:

The idea is first you mix your vinegar and dish soap in your scrubby dish wand, using equal parts of each. Wet down the inside of your shower… Then before (or after) you shower, you use the dish wand full of your shower and tub cleaner to gently scrub down the inside of your bathtub. Being sure to rinse it off well when you are done.

What I thought:

Well, let me start off by saying that I hate the smell of vinegar. If you have read any of my previous posts involving vinegar then you are aware of this! haha However, I hate cleaning the shower a million times worse than I hate the smell of vinegar!

In the original post where I got the idea from, she states to “make sure you keep the wand upright so the liquid doesn’t leak out”. Having never used a dish wand before, I was not sure exactly what she meant…I AM NOW!!! hahaha I thought to myself that it made more since to add the vinegar first, that way all of the dish soap didn’t get stuck near the scrubby part of the dish wand. Well it turns out I was wrong! I now know what The Joyful Homemaker was talking about! As I poured my vinegar in, it started to leak out of the hole near the scrubber part of the wand. I think next time I will add the soap first.

My results:

As I mentioned above I like cleaning my shower like I would like having the plague! (well not really that bad, but you get the point) So this method is a great alternative to my normal spray and scrub routine. It not only took less effort, but my shower hasn’t looked this clean in years! haha I am only kidding about the years part…my shower hasn’t looked this clean in weeks! I will be doing this again for sure!!!!!
