I have a few lemons beginning to shrivel up and a dirty kitchen. Therefore, when I scrolled past a pin showing how to clean your wood cutting board with lemon and salt- I knew it was the perfect match for me.
As many of you regulars have noticed, Cassie and I have taken a year-long hiatus from PinTriedIt. But life has it’s circles and we have made our way back!
How to Clean a Wood Cutting Board Without Dangerous Chemicals
A cutting board is generally an area that comes into contact with your food, so using harsh chemicals on a wood that will soak it up- is not always a great idea. I have been using hot water but you and I know that a wood cutting board needs to be deodorized and sanitized, preferably in a natural and safe way.
Here’s my dirty and sticky wood cutting board.
Rachael from AllKindsofYumm.com posted that using a lemon and kosher salt is a great all-natural and safe way to clean your kitchen’s wood cutting board. Her before and after pictures were impressive enough for me to give this one a shot.
Step 1. Rub a lemon that has been cut in half all over the cutting board.
Step 2. Pour Kosher Salt over wooden cutting board and let sit 10-15 minutes.
Step 3. With half of lemon, rub over board again- using the salt like an exfoliant to clean the cutting board.
Step 4. Rinse and dry.
The lemon and salt worked great! The board is cleaner than I expected it to be and I am confident it is not crawling with germs after the lemon bath it received. The salt did a great job of getting the surface gunk off and probably did even more chemistry-type of things that I have no clue about.
Could I Have Used Table Salt instead of Kosher Salt?
From the online research I did about the difference between Table Salt and Kosher Salt in cleaning, kosher is probably going to give you a better grit to clean the surface. Table salt may work if that’s all you have on hand, but may not be abrasive enough to get the grime off. If you have a lemon sitting around like I did- it’s worth a shot.
Thanks All Kinds of Yumm for this great kitchen cleaning tip that really works!
