Homemade Fabric Softener

by Cassie on September 4, 2012

I have been making homemade laundry soap for a few years now, and I LOVE it. When I came across a pin for homemade fabric softener I knew I had to try it also. I am up for anything that will save me a buck or two! (Aren’t we all?)

What you need:

  • 3 cups HOT Tap Water
  • 1 cup Conditioner (I used Tropical Coconut from Suave)
  • 1 and 1/2 cups White Vinegar

How to:

First you mix your conditioner with your hot water until it dissolves, then you add your vinegar and stir. It is just that simple!

Note:
  • I cut the original recipe  in half. (I didn’t want to be stuck with tons of fabric softener if I didn’t like it!) If you want to follow the original recipe it is as follows… 6 cups hot water, 3 cups white vinegar, and 2 cups conditioner.

My concerns:

I was a little bit concerned at first, I mean clothes are not cheap and I didn’t want grease spots or anything on them. Plus, I didn’t want my clothes smelling like vinegar. I decided that I would try the DIY fabric softener on my Husbands work clothes first. I figured that if  it left greasy conditioner marks, at least you wouldn’t notice because his work clothes are grungy anyhow! :)

The verdict:

Overall I was very happy with this DIY fabric softener pin.  I was pleased that the vinegar smell had vanished, and I was left with soft comfy clothes that didn’t have any grease spots on them. It was very easy to make and I love that it is made with thing that I already had on hand.

I’m just curious, I made this one today, but the one I followed was double this recipe. I used kiwi lime daily defense because I could only find strawberry suave and didn’t care for the scent. I’ve done 4 or 5 loads today and while it does work softness wise, it’s missing a static component. My husband zapped our oldest helping him get ready for bed lol.

Do you have any suggestions for this issue, or had any experience with it?

That is a great question. We still use dryer sheets so have not faced the issue but something i would like to find a solution too.
