I have a set of deep bowls that I absolutely love. They are great for cereal and really good for ice cream. They are the perfect size- big. However, after the years of spoons scratching and dishwasher beatings, my white bowls were looking really bad.
Mom Outnumbered is a blog where I learned a trick that saved my scratched dishes and my money!
While browsing Pinterest a saw I white plate that immediately made me think of my sad white cereal bowls. It was scratched up in the same way.
But then it showed an after picture of the same plate- which looked brand new!
What’s the trick?
How to Repair Scratched Dishes
Repairing scratched dishes very simple. For me, it involved only one product- which I happened to already have.
Bar Keepers is a cleaning and polishing powder I bought to clean my stainless steel refrigerator. I was impressed with it then and I am super impressed with it now! I used a damp paper towl and sprinkled some of the bar keeper powder onto it. I

then scrubbed over the bowl and watched as it turned completely white again! I was honestly in disbelief.
I thought for sure when I rinsed it off, it would be just like it was.
But to my surprise it didn’t just temporarily color it white again! It was like a brand new
It repaired my scratched dishes!!!
I am baffled at how this works. You would think the bar keepers powder would make things worse by wearing the paint down thinner. But instead it’s like its moving the paint around and filling in the gaps?!?! I don’t know. But it worked for me!!!
I’m not sure what these dishes are made of. They seem like some kind of ceramic. I can tell you my bowls were bought at Walmart and are Mainstay brand– which is a pretty generic and cheap brand. I probably paid $2 a bowl (if that). I don’t know if it will work on your dishes too- but if you are ready to trash them over scratches- then give this a try first! You may be amazed.
However, there is a warning on the Bar Keepers bottle that says it is an abrasive powder- so don’t try this on your grandma’s old fine china if you aren’t willing to take the risk.
