School is officially out for the summer here in my area of Indiana. I have been looking forward to getting more hours a day to spend with my girls on projects just like this Microwave Puffy Paint project from Mom’s Crafty Space. It calls for five very basic ingredients I am sure just about every one of you have. The kids thought it was a lot of fun, a bit messy and kind of stinky. All the things kids love!
Microwave Puffy Paint Supplies
- 2 Cup of Flour
- 6 Teaspoons of Baking Powder
- 2 Teaspoon of Salt
- Food Coloring
Instructions for Making
Mix up the dry ingredients and then add enough water to give you the consistency of pancakes. Don’t think too much- it doesn’t have to be exact. I know we all make pancakes difference consistencies. Just remember it is a paint, so just don’t go too runny.
This is enough to make about 4 bags of paint.
Split it up among 4 baggies and then add the food colors of your choice.
Get the kids to squeeze the bags until the colors are fully mixed.
Then go to a place you don’t mind getting a bit messy. We chose the back yard!
Snip a teeny tiny little bit off the corner of the baggy.
Show the kids how to draw as though you are decorating a cake.
Mircowave Puffy Paint
Once the kids get their creativity out of their system, microwave their art piece for about 30-45 seconds.
Their designs will come out dry and puffy!
The kids loved this! I had a friend over with her triplet boys. They loved it- especially mixing up the colors.
- The food coloring may stain, so be sure your kids are wearing clothes you don’t mind getting colorful.
- The smell after microwaving is kind of stinky. But nothing too bad.
- Try to inform the kids not to put too much on the paper at once or it will never dry and puff up!
- Use heavy card stock paper so the paint doesn’t soak through.
Overall I really enjoyed this project with the kids and they enjoyed it as well.
