Every year for my childrens birthday I make them a cake! I feel that a homemade cake is way cooler than a store bought one, and I let my kids pick whatever kind of cake they want. I have made three layer cakes with neon icing, green cakes with sprinkles, a cake that looks like a ladybug, and so on…This year my daughter could not make her mind up on what kind of cake she wanted. Being a “pin tester” I gave her my Kindle and brought up the Pinterest app with a search of Birthday cakes and told her find what she wanted…That was my first mistake! hahaha Low and behold she picked a two layer Monsters, Inc. Cake with a zebra cake in the middle! I am far from Buddy Valastro (the creative genius from “Cake Boss”) or master cake baker by any stretch of the imagination. But being a pin tester I knew that I had to give it my best try.
Well, there it is… Before you judge the bumps and wrinkles in Mike Wazowski’s face…I was going for an elderly Mike…haha That is what I am telling myself anyhow. Well, not really, this is the first time I have ever made or used fondant! I don’t think I did to bad for my first time. At least you can tell who it is! 🙂 (Find the original cake that caught my daughters eye here.)
What you need for the Monsters, Inc. Cake:
For the cake you need…
- 2 vanilla cake mixes (I used 2 because I made a two layer cake)
You will also need all of the ingrediants to follow the box instructions.
- Food coloring
For the frosting…
- I used store bought cans of icing ( I am a cheater like that…don’t hate)
- I dyed it with food coloring to make Sully’s fur
I also made some Marshmallow fondant.
For that you need…
- 1 bag of Mini Marshmallows
- Powdered Sugar
I used the Marshmallow fondant recipe from Mandy’s recipe box
How you make the Monsters, Inc. Cake…the zebra cake inside:
- First you start with your two cake mixes…You need to mix them according to the box instructions…
(BUT WAIT…You can add the food coloring after you mix up the cake, but I find that the cake has a funny consistency if you stir it to much so I add the food coloring to the water before I stir it into my cake mix. DO NOT try to add it to the oil…It doesn’t work, I tried it! hahaha)
I mixed one cake mix purple and one blue, but you can do any color that you want to.
Once your batter is mixed and you have the color you want…Put one scoop of color #1 in the center of the baking pan and then directly over that put a scoop of color #2…then #1, #2, #1,#2…and so on and so on until you have enough batter in your baking pan.
Then bake according to your box instructions. And let each layer cool completely.
Once your cakes have cooled you need to even them up so they will set even and not split…Doesn’t that look awesome!
you add your Homemade Marshmallow Fondant, you have to “dirty ice” the cake. For those of you that do not watch “Cake Boss” Dirty ice is a fancy way of saying that you need to slap some icing on the cake before you put the fondant on.
After you have the fondant smoothed It is time to make the Sully fur!!! I started by adding the food coloring to my icing until I got the colors that I wanted. After that I added the icing to a piping bag (using our mess free and Pin Proved tip) and used the little star tips to make the icing look like fur!
Then you make the eye, mouth and horns with fondant and add them to the top… I just looked at a few pictures and used my imagination to shape them to what I thought Mike should look like. Now it is time to cut and EAT the cake…The best part if you ask me.
Doesn’t that look Awesome! I am so happy with the way it turned out. I know this is not the normal way we Pin test, but I loved this Monsters, Inc. Cake so much and it was such a huge hit at her party that I just had to share!
Pin Tried It!!!!
Now all that is left to do is wait on a call from Buddy Valastro with job offers…a girl can dream cant she? 🙂
